Mauritius Overview

Mauritius is an island situated off the coast of Africa in the Indian Ocean. The total land area of the island is 787 square miles. It is officially known as the Republic of Mauritius. The Republic includes the islands of St. Brandon, Rodrigues and the Agalega Islands. Together with Rodrigues and Reunion, Mauritius is part of the Mascarene Islands. Mauritius gained its independence from the United Kingdom on 12 March 1968. It became a republic on 12 March 1992.

The capital city of Mauritius is Port Louis.

The official language is English, however French is also widely spoken and predominantly used in the media. The most widely spoken language is Mauritian Creole.
